Now that you've signed up for the
Do Not Call Registry to save yourself from telemarketers, have
you joined the Do Not E-mail Registry to get rid of unwanted
e-mails?
No? Good, because it's a fake.
You may have heard that the Federal Trade
Commission is setting up a Do Not Spam Registry. While they are
looking into the possibility, no such database exists yet. That
didn't stop some unscrupulous spammers from trying to get people
to sign up at their site "unsub.us."
"The Web site at 'unsub.us' mimics the language,
look, and navigation of the Web site for the National Do Not
Call Registry, a legitimate free service of the federal
government. The unsub.us site is not run or authorized by the
FTC," warned an alert sent out by the FTC.
The FTC is investigating the site to discover if
it was part of an Internet scam to collect e-mail addresses to
sell to spammers -- or worse, a site designed to collect
personal information in order to commit identity theft.
While unsub.us has been shut down, a clever
spammer may set up a new site to run the same scam. No matter
what the site address is, do not fall for any scam that offers
to put you on a Do Not E-mail Registry.
If you get any e-mail offers to join a Do
Not E-mail Registry, either delete them, or report them to the
FTC by visiting
www.ftc.gov. If you feel you may already be a victim of this
scam, file a report with the FTC and take steps to
protect your identity.
