900 Area Code Scam |
|
By dialing a 900 area code number, you can
order products, hear pre-recorded messages, cast votes in an
opinion poll or converse with someone offering certain
information. For these services, you will be charged a flat fee
for the entire call, or pay for each minute that you stay on the
phone. Unlike 800 numbers, there is always a charge associated
with a 900 call. Precautions
- Know the precise cost of the call. Be
suspicious of promotions that do not disclose the costs up
front.
- Deal only with reputable companies.
Many well-known companies and organizations sponsor 900 number
services. The costs are stated up front. Be aware that some
bogus companies give sales pitches for products or services
that do not exist or are grossly misrepresented.
- Realize that there is always a charge
for a 900 number. Even when a 900 number promotion offers free
gifts, you must realize you may be charged a great deal for
the call itself.
- Explain 900 numbers thoroughly to
children. Many 900 number television promotions are aimed
specifically at children, based on their interests and naivete.
- Check the bill for accuracy. Make sure
the charges on your telephone bill for 900 number services are
accurate.
